School Comparison Statistics.

These statistics are the basis of publications by The West Australian and The Sunday Times. While the media take the view that these statistics display the comparative merits of each school, it should be noted that researchers into school effectiveness agree that schools account for only about 9 percent of the variance between students. Students' personal backgrounds account for most of the variance in academic performance.

The full set of published articles, with comment by journalists and education experts, may be seen in the back issues of the newspapers concerned. These are available for viewing in the Alexander Library in Perth, and also in many other local libraries. Back issues may also be purchased from newsagents. The Curriculum Council is not a source of these printed articles.

Despite warning the public that there are many other factors involved in answering the question "Is this school right for my child?", the Curriculum Council finds that there is still considerable interest in these statistical tables. They may be viewed below by clicking on the appropriate selection.
