VET industry specific courses

The Council will collaborate with schools to develop 12 industry specific courses during 2008. The availability of these courses for 2009 will depend on the availability of the training packages under review.
The areas being considered are:

·Automotive
·Creative Industries (Music)
·Construction
·Hospitality
·Business
·Information Technology
·Community Services
·Primary Industries
·Creative Industries (Art)
·Sport and Recreation
·Creative Industries (Media)
·Tourism

A VET industry specific course is based on a training package qualification in which competency electives are generally prescribed.

To meet VET course requirements and achieve course unit credit towards a WACE, students must follow the course structure, attain required units of competency and fulfil the work placement requirement.

Each industry specific VET course will also have an optional exam based on underpinning knowledge and skills of core competencies from a selected training package qualification. The written examination is independent of the competency-based assessment undertaken during the course and has no bearing to a student’s eligibility to receive a training package qualification. Once courses and sample examinations are developed, the universities will be able to consider whether scores in these exams could count towards a student’s tertiary entrance score.

Students must participate in additional workplace learning of at least 55 hours over two units of a VET course.
Any schools wishing to offer an industry specific course should contact the Council.
