Small group moderation information

The Council’s small group moderation procedures provide schools with the opportunity to minimise potential anomalies which can occur during the statistical moderation of school marks of students in a small group. Section 4.9 of the WACE Manual 2012 provides a detailed explanation of the Council’s small group moderation procedures. Please note that for 2012 and beyond, a school must become involved in a small group moderation partnership where it has a projected number of fewer than six WACE examination candidates in a particular course at either Stage 2 or Stage 3. Previously participation was required where the number of examination candidates was fewer than 10.

When determining the number of WACE examination candidates in a course/stage, schools need to take into consideration any students who meet the WACE examination exemption requirements and are not intending to sit the examination. Sub-section 7.2.9 of the WACE Manual 2012 provides details of the examination exemption requirements.

When the projected number of candidates is six or more, the school may choose to form a partnership to increase the cohort or to allow for possible reductions in enrolments which may result in fewer than six students sitting the WACE examination.

Schools need to register their small group moderation partnerships with the Council by 17 February 2012. The form is available in Section 8 of the WACE Procedures File 2012.
