  • Belridge SHS pioneers online testing

Year 11 Chemistry students at Belridge Senior High School are the first in the state to complete examinations online.

The students are part of a pilot project that is testing online examination software.

Curriculum Council chief executive officer, David Wood, said it is likely that within 10 to 15 years, many final year school courses will be examined online.

Mr Wood said the advantages of online exams include providing teachers with immediate access to students’ marks, therefore freeing teachers up for all-important lesson preparation and teaching.

“Another strength of online marking is the fact that students receive their own ‘coaching report’ that includes detailed feedback on each question and how they went relative to others,” he said.

“Just as importantly, they will be able to review the exam and see the correct answers.

“The online testing pilot underway in Western Australia is unique because it includes a combination of multiple-choice answers as well as ‘drop & drag’ and short answers.

“Online marking programs in use in other states across Australia are typically only used for multiple choice questions.

“The main challenge in going forward with this technology is computer access in schools.”

Other schools involved in the online testing pilot program this semester are Rockingham and Hampton senior high schools. The pilot program will be expanded to eight schools in second semester.

The Curriculum Council’s online project officer, Fred Adler, said there are still technical issues within school computer networks and within the online testing program itself, but these issues are being resolved.

Mr Adler said further examination items are being developed to create a bank of questions.
